Music Development

As our soap opera trailer was planned to have no diegetic sound, we've had the task of deciding what music to use. We decided that music needs to build up over time, building to a point to match when Rachel sees Ben. It will also need to depict Rachel's manipulative behaviour and the view others have on her, so the music will need to be disapproving and aggressive.

At first, we looked up royalty free music on sites such as Incompetech. This is where we chose music for our animatic storyboard, which was used to test and give an idea of how that music might work with the actual clips.

Whilst this music builds up over time as we wanted it to, it doesn't quite show Rachel's dark intentions to the viewer. After viewing through Incompetech some more, we found that our needs were too specific to find music like that which was freely available.

This is when we decided to try out the Mac program, GarageBand, which allows you to make your own music from a set of sound loops. Using this program, we were able to time things to our need in conjunction with our trailer. It could also be altered for the different rough cuts, which were different lengths. This was a lot more benfitial than finding music on line as we could alter it however we liked and could be very specific about the type of sound, tempo and mood the music had.
